National Legal Services Authority

The National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) has been constituted under the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987 to provide free Legal Services to the weaker sections of the society and to organize Lok Adalats for amicable settlement of disputes.

His Lordship was enrolled as an Advocate on July 25, 1973 at Madras. His Lordship Practiced in all types of Writ, Civil and Criminal matters, Company Petition, Insolvency Petitions, Habeas Corpus Petitions both on Original and Appellate sides of the Madras High Court. His Lordship Worked as Government Advocate, Additional Government Pleader, Special Government Pleader in the Madras High Court. Also worked as Legal Adviser for several State owned Transport Corporations, Municipalities, Nationalized Banks etc. His Lordship was Appointed as a permanent Judge of the Madras High Court on January 8, 1996 and transferred to the Punjab & Haryana High Court on 20.04.2007. His Lordship is Appointed as a Judge of the Supreme Court of India on 21.08.2007.

His Lordship was born at Jodhpur on 12.12.1948 and Graduated in the year 1968 from Jodhpur University passed LL.B. Examination in the year 1971 with Gold Medal from Rajasthan University. His Lordship joined the legal profession and Practiced in Rajasthan High Court at Jodhpur till June, 1977 and shifted to Jaipur on creation of High Court Bench at Jaipur. Mainly practiced in Constitutional Law but conducted criminal cases as amicus curiae. His Lordship represented the State Government in special cases and almost all the Universities of Rajasthan, various Public Corporations, Educational Institutions and Local Authorities before the High Court. He was elevated to the Bench of Rajasthan High Court on 20.07.1990. His Lordship was transferred to Punjab and Haryana High Court on 28.04.1994, and thereafter as Judge of the Gujarat High Court on 28.02.2005. His Lordship was sworn in as the Chief Justice of the High Court of Andhra Pradesh on 27.11.2005. His Lordship was elevated to the Supreme Court and assumed Office on 12.11.2007.

NALSA is housed at 12/11, Jam Nagar House, New Delhi-110011.In every State, State Legal Services Authority has been constituted to give effect to the policies and directions of the NALSA and to give free legal services to the people and conduct Lok Adalats in the State. The State Legal Services Authority is headed by Hon’ble the Chief Justice of the respective High Court who is the Patron-in-Chief of the State Legal Services Authority.
In every District, District Legal Services Authority has been constituted to implement Legal Services Programmes in the District. The District Legal Services Authority is situated in the District Courts Complex in every District and chaired by the District Judge of the respective district.
